The main Island of Sri Lanka has a land mass of 65,610 sq. kms and has several small islands speckled along its coast. Geographically the Island consists of an undulating coastal belt, which encircles an area of central highlands which rise to just over 2,500 meters.
The mean average temperature is approximately 28 degrees C throughout the year along the coastal belt, and cools gradually according to elevation. An average temperature of 16 degrees C in the central highlands.

Although the Island is not large, it has 07 distinct climatic regions which supports a varied Flora of approximately 4,600 species, of which nearly 800 endemic.
Many are indigenous to the South Asian region and many of them are introductions. Some of the introduced plants have been on the Island for over 2000 yrs. But the vast amount of species that were introduced to the Island have arrived since the arrival of the Europeans in early 16th Century. In fact cash crops such as Tea, Rubber, Coffee and Cocoa were all introduced by the Europeans.
The Sri Lankan people have a tremendous knowledge of Herbal or Ayurvedic Medicine which reaches to over 3000 yrs.

Since Sri Lanka is a Tropical Island nearly all of its Flora are in constant growth, though generally this pattern of growth is dominated by the 02 monsoons that dictate the weather conditions on the Island. They are namely the South West Monsoon, which is from early May to late September, and the North East Monsoon which is usually from early November to late March.
No matter which time of the year you choose, you will see several species of Flora in their best condition. |
